This track seems a lot more complex than some of your other stuff even today, can you walk me through it a little bit? You've told me your setup is usually a lot of chiptune synths with effects and percussion, but what effects specifically do you like to use and are there any specific plugins you use a lot?

Yeah. I flit in and out of complexity. Just sorta make what comes to me. I do remember this track coming together easily.
This was quite a while ago. I believe I was using DFX Buffer Override/stuttering/ratcheting for this piece with a lot of the melodics. Maybe something granular? +delay+reverb. As far as exact ones I'm not sure. Sometimes I just use layers of FL studio stock mixed with random bits and bobs freeware, ancient or otherwise. I used this Lexicon 'Pantheon' reverb plugin on quite a bit of things for a while. It came with my old audio interface, hah. It was pretty solid. I messed with a lot of random free/donation/ware back in the day and would try to make it work if I could. The drive to just experiment with stuff was a big motivator.
I do a lot of manual drum editing. Pretty exhaustive sometimes. Sometimes I'll just run a drum loop through effects and record me messing it up. Then chop it up again. Do another pass, etc. I like to use a lot of destructive FX like bitcrush / distortion / stretching / overdrive / etc.

That sound at the beginning of this - that you use in a lot of songs lol (I saw another comment on this piece), what is it? Do you have any specific sample packs or drum kits you use? I'm just really interested in getting to know how this sort of sound is made, I've never seen it anywhere else.

Some DX7 synth inspired sound - originally from one note from a Sega Genesis :D. I fell in love with the random find. This is also using Addictive Audio's drum plugin. Played the percussion with a keyboard. Hah. I don't use pre-built samples packs or anything. One shots for percussion, yes. Other times I'm just using simple synth waves, chiptune like + effects. My set-up is usually pretty simple.
